Two early goals put Leeds in command of the game. John Buckley put them one up in the eleventh minute from the penalty spot and two minutes later Peter Swan doubled their lead. After a penalty had been awarded for hand ball, John Buckley got his second goal from the spot in the thirtry-first minute. Peter Swan completed the scoring in the second half with his second and United's fourth when Nigel Thompson played him in to beat a defender before beating the keeper with a low shot.
